The NWA of today reminds me of the NWA of the 1970s... in a good way. Let me set the scene....
NWA Circa 1979
Lou Thesz is still fresh in people''s minds as the greatest world heavyweight champion, from his victory over Everett Marshall (who had defeated Baba) to his technical masterclass with Whipper Watson.
There was of course the era of Orville Brown's original NWA where he won the title many times within one company.
Thesz later traded the title with Bill Longson and Whipper Watson before Hutton, O'Connor and Rogers became champion. Thesz won his final NWA World title from longtime rival Buddy Rogers, followed by the WWF's split from the NWA.
The legendary icon Lou Thesz lost to brawler Gene Kiniski who held the title until he was defeated by the popular Dory Funk Jr.
Then a new era began. Harley Race won his first world title.
Race lost the belt to technical master Jack Brisco who was presented with a red NWA title belt.
Brisco and Race traded the belt with Shohei Baba, the first Japanese champion and hardcore brawler Terry Funk and popular face Dusty Rhodes won the title.
Harley Race then entered his fourth reign as world heavyweight champion....then once again he was defeated by popular face Dusty Rhodes.
NWA Circa 2011
Ric Flair is still fresh in people''s minds as the greatest world heavyweight champion, from his victory over Harley Race (who had defeated Baba) to his technical masterclass with Ricky Steamboat.
Flair later traded the title with Sting and Tatsumi Fujinami before Chono, Muta and Windham became champion. Flair won his final NWA World title from longtime rival Barry Windham, followed by WCW's split from the NWA.
There was of course the era of Jeff Jarrett's TNA where he won the title many times within one company.
The legendary icon Sting lost to brawler Abyss who held the title until he was defeated by the popular Christian, trained by Dory Funk Jr.
Then a new era began. Adam Pearce won his first world title.
Pearce lost the belt to technical master Brent Albright who was presented with a red NWA title belt.
Albright and Pearce traded the belt with Blue Demon, the first Mexican champion and hardcore brawler The Sheik and popular face Colt Cobana won the title.
Adam Pearce then entered his fourth reign as world heavyweight champion.....then once again he was defeated by popular face Colt Cobana.
